Q&A: QUESTIONS & ASHLEY

Lately I've received a handful of emails regarding the baby gear we've used with Max and what I'd recommend to new and expecting parents. With just five months under my belt, I'd hardly call myself an expert on the matter; however, I do know I wasted a lot of money on stuff we barely used—most of which was purchased to "prepare" for his big arrival. Ha Ha! Go figure. While 90 percent of the essentials mentioned in today's post were purchased AFTER Max was born, I feel confident suggesting them to anyone with a bun in the oven. Each baby is different, but you can't go wrong with the following basics:

  • Newborn Sleeper Gowns // I had NO idea how much I'd love these until Max arrived. We had a couple of gowns on constant rotation in the early weeks. It was pretty much the only thing he wore when he was at the house. They made diaper changes so much easier especially late at night when nobody's got time or the patience for snaps and buttons.
  • The Miracle Blanket // Flyboy is a swaddling master, but our little Houdini always managed to break out and that's when he'd wake up. Nooooooo! Once we started using The Miracle Blanket (around two months), we noticed that Max would sleep for 6+ hour stretches at night. It was especially handy in the middle of the night when we were too tired to achieve the perfect swaddle. In the event you or someone you know is dealing with a colicky baby, I would recommend this in a heartbeat. It was one of the few ways in which we could soothe Max when he was incredibly fussy.
  • White Noise Machine // We started out with an app on our phones, but ended up purchasing this sound machine when we realized how much Max enjoyed the white noise. Sure it might sound like we live in a wind tunnel at night, but that's a small price to pay for some sound snoozing. I also think it's one of the main reasons Max can sleep through anything.
  • 4moms Mamaroo Swing // Hands down, my all-time favorite baby essential! I attribute any productivity that's gone on in the past few months to this miracle device. We ended up purchasing ours about a month after Max was born, and our life improved the moment it arrived at our doorstep. Sweet freedom!
  • Puj Foldable Bath Tub // Hi, my name is Ashley, and I can't stand clutter. I'm rather picky about how items are stored. Oh, and I get all sorts of anxiety whenever items waste perfectly useful space. Woot! Type-A(shley) in the house! All confessions aside, this foldable tub is a dream come true. It was especially handy in the early days when Max was tiny; it offered some security and structure whenever we'd bathe him in the kitchen sink. I typically store our Puj on a hook that's hidden behind my bathroom door. I adore the simple design and that it's user-friendly. No space issues or clutter around here, my friends! I'm also really excited to use it on our upcoming trips because it's so compact.
  • Cloth Diapers // As I purchased items to prepare for Max's arrival, my mom suggested I buy a pack or two of white cloth diapers. It didn't take long for me to realize why they would become so handy for spit-up, blowouts, and burp cloths. The plain white color makes it easy for me to throw into the wash with our bath towels and bleached if necessary.
  • Aden + Anais Swaddling Blankets // We received these as a gift and ended up buying another set after we realized how invaluable they were around our house. They're perfect for swaddling and tummy time, but also double as a great nursing cover and burp cloth. We have one staged in every room and bag.
  • Bibs // Run, don't walk, to the nearest Ikea and stock up on these cheap bibs. For less than four dollars, you get a pack of three. These striped necessities are not only soft, but they wash up like a dream.
  • Ergobaby Carrier // We purchased a few different carriers (Baby Björn, Solly Baby, etc.), and this is my favorite. In the beginning, I was a little hesitant to invest in an Ergo carrier, especially when it already felt like we were dropping money left and right on baby crap. Oops, I meant gear! If I would have just ordered this one from the start, I would have saved us some time and money. I think what I like most about the Ergobaby 360 is that it offers back support, which the others seemed to lack. It's no secret that Max is growing like a weed, and since Flyboy is tall and I'm short, we needed a comfortable carrier that would suit both of our body types. This is a keeper that's worth the investment.
  • Organic Cotton Blanket // Can you ever have enough blankets? I didn't think so. I ordered this one from The Honest Company, and I absolutely adore it! Perhaps the textured polka dots might give it away? This sweet throw is perfect for cuddling and napping. It's been especially handy this winter whenever Max and I are out and about running errands. It's the perfect weight to keep him warm and drape over his car seat.
  • Nuna Pipa Car Seat // Deciding on a car seat and stroller seemed like the most overwhelming task when we were preparing for Max. I'm SO glad we got the Pipa Car Seat and Pepp Stroller. This top-rated Nuna car seat is superior quality, lightweight, and easy to install. I especially love the canopy. When the stroller adapters are attached to the Pepp Stroller, the Pipa Car Seat can be used. Flyboy and I have been impressed with the stroller's smooth ride and compactness when folded. It's also lightweight, easy to set up, and close down.
  • Boudreaux's Butt Paste // Around the three-week mark, Max got a diaper rash, and this paste took care of it within a day.
  • The Honest Company Diaper Bundle // Frequent diaper changes are bearable when you're working with eco-friendly diapers adorned with adorable prints. Who's with me?! I also love the convenience of having the diapers and wipes mailed to our doorstep each month. It's one less thing to have to remember or juggle when we go grocery shopping.
  • The Happiest Baby on the Block DVD // Dr. Harvey Karp's how-to video is a must for any new parent. I can assure you, it's SO worth the painful 80s hair styles! After watching the DVD one night, I could instantly see a new confidence in the way that Flyboy approached Max. We both learned new ways to soothe him effectively.

If you find yourself overwhelmed in the baby aisle or defeated by confusing customer reviews, just know that so many of us have been there and we survived. Remember that you don't have to have it all figured out. You already have just what your baby needs. With time and a subscription to Amazon Prime you'll figure out the rest! I promise.

LIFE'S LITTLE DETAILS

"THE DETAILS ARE NOT THE DETAILS. THEY MAKE THE DESIGN." — CHARLES EAMES

Oh hey, it's Tuesday! I guess that Monday Moodboard I had in the works didn't get finished quite as I'd hoped. Oops! I'll blame it on Frank Underwood and the lure of comfy pajama pants and a fresh batch of chili on this dreary Swell Rio weekend. Yes, it was one of THOSE weekends. In fact, Saturday started out rather productive, but my tenacity peaked right about 1:30 pm and didn't return until Monday morning. I suppose that will happen when you finally upgrade your phone and you're sucked into a black hole of resetting apps and updating login information. Stressful? Yes. Ridiculous? Well, maybe just a tad. Then, as soon as Flyboy and I finally felt situated with all of the iPhone 6 newness, it was time to settle in for some House of Cards. I know what you must be thinking, those two really know how to unplug. Ha! Between all the buffering and baby, we couldn't help but chuckle about how our binge-watching days of the past have changed since Max joined the fam. If we're lucky, it might take us a few months to finish season three, but the cute kid asleep on my lap makes it totally worth it.

A FEW NOTES ABOUT THE FEATURED DETAILS:
  • This Texas weather is nutty, and I'm ready for some consistent temps. Our front yard is looking rather drab, and I can't wait to start adding some color and life to the landscaping. All of the delightful plants at Home Depot are wooing me.
  • Simple pleasures come in the form of Blackberries, sipping lattes, and a new children's book about Matisse
  • As coined by my witty father, March Maxness is upon us. Yippee! There are just so many exciting things happening this month. Giddy is an understatement, my friends. Let the list-making and countdown officially begin.
  • That miniature snowman clad with Craisin eyes, pencil limbs, and a grosgrain scarf was created by my dear dad for Max. It's adorable overload, and I can't help but think my creative mother had something to do with the accessorizing.
  • I'm so happy I snapped a photo of Flyboy and Max before Mustache March kicked off on Sunday. Creepy facial hair in the name of camaraderie just isn't my thing, and I'm counting the days until the growth above FB's lip will be shaved off.

Alright, enough of my babbling. How are YOU? How's your week?

LURVE LOAVE LUFF

Let's get right to it, shall we?
Here's what made me feel all twitterpated, smile contagiously, giggle uncontrollably, etc.

  • Cece Metallic Ballet Flats // For obvious reasons, I adored these flats even before I had Max. However, today, with a baby in tow, I love them more than ever because they instantly add a shiny element and complete any regular mom-semble.
  • Serena & Lily New Arrivals // Last week, the latest S&L catalog showed up in my mailbox, and I found myself drooling over EVERY stinking page. I loved seeing the work of Erin Flett featured throughout the catalog. Among all the fabulosity, I couldn't help but love this "Sun" print and this pleated pendant. They are seriously swoon worthy!
  • Kate Spade for Kids // Okay, so I knew about the Gap collaboration this past Winter, but I had no idea that there's an actual "Kids" category on the KSNY website. For as much as I stalk the online selection, I'm slightly embarrassed it's taken me so long to see this. And can we just take a moment and discuss all that's precious about this pink jacket?
  • While we're talking about Kate Spade, I should probably note how much I adore the Lily Avenue Kiki (cobalt + scallops).
  • Goodlife Key Tags // Digging through your tote can be a real hassle. Set yourself up for success and a little cheer with this adorable Hello Sunshine keychain? P.S. Is Lent over yet? Just kidding.
  • Caramel & Cheddar Boom Chicka Pop // Oh no they didn't! Oh yes, they DID! Now how am I going to get my hands on a bag? This could be really dangerous. Lady Google tells me it's available on Amazon (of course!). Do you think I could justify this as one of those necessary pantry purchases? I'm thinking it's more sustenance and less Treat Yo Self.
  • While I drool and dream about the crazy delicious mix mentioned above, I can't help but get a little bit excited about getting a gel manicure this weekend. It's been far too long, my friends. I sure hope my nail lady is prepared for this Chatty Cathy (that's me!) come Saturday and her predictable, yet classic, color of choice. Oh hey, Clambake!
  • Buckle up, color lovers! This palette from J.Crew's Behind the Design: Garment-Dyed Tees feature will make you wildly giddy. Also, is that a little Rothko I see just peeking out from the side? Mr. Muytjens, say it ain't so.
  • Along with some weekend pampering, I plan on list-making with gusto. A special thanks goes out to my trusty notepad
  • And in honor of Ron Swanson and the series finale of Parks and Recreation (hold me), maybe Flyboy and I should consider dusting off the ol' smoker? This Pitt Cue Co. cookbook might be just the right place to start.

And now, the moment we've all been waiting for...

THURSDAY'S THOUGHTS

via

FEELING: It's no secret I'm a pretty reserved gal. Some might even say I'm tightly wound. Ha! While I tend to approach each day with a certain amount of structure and intensity, there are a few things that really bring out the silly and playful in me (gin and a J.Crew style guide, to name a few). I suppose it's a side that I tend to protect and share with only my dearest family and friends—oh, how thoughtful! I'm not entirely sure why I feel the need to carry on like this, but I've realized that life with Max has made me a bit more uninhibited and I like it. Everyone tells you that having a baby will change you, and they're right. You can't really prepare yourself for the ways in which you'll personally evolve, but in just four short months, I can already tell I'm a better individual because of him.

THANKFUL FOR: We plan to visit my parents for two weeks in March. Woo Hoo! As we get closer to our trip, I grow more and more excited. A change of scenery and quality time with family is much-needed right about now. I originally planned to make this journey while Flyboy was at training in January, but Beesly's surgery and recuperation put a hold on any traveling. At the time I was pretty bummed that our visit to see my parents was delayed, but I'm really excited that we get to go to D.C. as a family.

THINKING ABOUT: I typically give up soda and chocolate for Lent, but on Fat Tuesday I got a text from my mom that said she was giving up online shopping this year. Oh, the horror! In an act of support, I agreed to join her. With the exception of Amazon staples (toiletries, baby gear we can't get in Swell Rio, dog treats, etc.), there will be no "Treat Yo Self" purchases this Lenten Season. With a week under my belt, I watch the UPS truck drive by each afternoon and I can't help but wonder if my favorite delivery man misses me. I didn't really have much time to plan for this, and I'd like to tell him "It's not you, it's me." He has to notice that he never stops by our house anymore. I wonder if he misses the frequent deliveries and my frantic attempts to meet him at the door while Beesly barks.

EATING: In the last week I've tried a handful of new recipes, but there were two that really deserved an honorable mention on m' blog. If you're looking for ways to mix up your weekly meal plan, consider making this Shrimp, Avocado, and Roasted Corn Salad via Gimme Some Oven or these Parsnip and Garlic Chive Home Fries via HeartBeet Kitchen.

LISTENING TO: Shh! Do you hear that? It's the whirring sound of Max's swing, which is back in working order. Sweet freedom!

WATCHING: The Texas weather continues to fluctuate (80 degrees one day and 35 degrees the next), so Max has been a little bit congested. In an attempt to clear some of the mucus from his nose, I whipped out the old NoseFrida. Have you heard of this thing? The snotsucker features a tube that's placed against the baby's nostrils. Parents are able to use their own suction and draw mucus from their baby's nose. So bizarre and intriguing all at once. I'd heard rave reviews about this snazzy Swedish-designed aspirator, but I'd yet to try it. So, on Monday evening, Flyboy sat and watched as I
attempted to use this crazy device on Max. After I got over the initial giggling and Max stopped trying to put it in his mouth, I was impressed by how well it worked! I can't help but wonder how effective the Windi Gas and Colic Reliever would be. Then again, I'm not sure I'm adventurous enough to give it a shot.

LOVING: After last week's appointment with the pediatrician, we were encouraged to start introducing veggies and fruit into Max's diet in the event he showed an interest. We dabbled with a little rice cereal on Sunday, and he had a blast. Naturally, this meant it was time to arm ourselves with a high chair (we got this one) and a Baby Brezza Food Maker. I'm not going to lie, I'm pretty jazzed to finally make some healthy and homemade food for the bebe. I think I could have some fun with this!

Enough about me. How are you feeling today? What are you up to? Thanks for stopping by!!

HUMP DAY HAPPY HOUR

Most people dust off their juicer whenever they're in need of a good cleanse. I, on the other hand, need a refreshing cocktail as a good excuse to pull ours out from the cupboard. Potato, potahto. This past Sunday, in the name of blog research, I whipped up another gin concoction, and I'm here to tell you it's a keeper! Go on and bid adieu those winter blues with something tasty.

APPLE AND PEAR GIN COCKTAIL
Recipe from Naturally Ella
(Serves 2)

INGREDIENTS:
2 Ripe Pears
1 Green Apple
2.5 oz Gin
1 Tbsp Honey
2 Tbsp Lemon Juice
Club Soda
Rosemary Sprigs

DIRECTIONS:
  1. Remove cores and seeds from pears and apple.
  2. Run through juicer and add lemon juice immediately.
  3. Shake juice with gin and honey.
  4. Pour over ice.
  5. If desired, add a splash of club soda and garnish with a sprig of rosemary.
