Need Read Greed

Meet Alex McBride from Tangerines and Tulle
  • Need: I have been absolutely obsessed with oversized knit sweaters this fall, and this polka-dot one could not be more perfect! Its so cozy and will look adorable with tall boots!
  • Read: I just recently picked up The Perfectly Imperfect Home: How to Decorate and Live Well by Deborah Needleman, founding editor of Domino Magazine and am in love. When I read it, I feel like I am learning from a woman who has impeccable taste, finds all her clothing at little no-name boutiques, has that curly-unruly-bedhead hair, wears a bunch of rings, and whose home is her most prideful possession. The illustrations are gorgeous, ideas genius, and indexes necessary for any interior designer or wannabe like me.
  • Greed: I could not ask for better fall weather right now. It's right in between that time where the slight chill turns into the morning frost, and the more scarves, sweaters, and socks I can pile on, the better. But it's my biggest dream to have a tub like this to retreat to and warm my body and my soul.
We don't have a bath tub at Lil' Puna, so I'm quite envious of Alex's greed. Here's to daydreaming about relaxing bubble baths! Ahh!

P.S. Happy Halloween! I think I'll succumb to my sweet tooth and stuff myself silly with oodles of candy corn. How about you? Any bets on how many trick-or-treaters will venture up the hill? I've got a bowl of candy ready, but my guess is nada.

Trick or Treat Yo Self!

The motto for this day of indulgence...
Clothes: TREAT YO SELF!
Fragrances: TREAT YO SELF!
Massages: TREAT YO SELF!
Mimosas: TREAT YO SELF!
Fine leather goods: TREAT YO SELF!
It’s the best day of the year.

Over a year ago, I was introduced to the slogan "Treat Yo Self!I guess I have Parks & Recreation to thank, namely my favorite characters Tom Haverford and Donna MeagleI remember watching the Pawnee Rangers episode and being absolutely tickled by Donna and Tom's annual ritual -- a day of pampering, fine leather goods, mimosas, and cupcakes. This day of complete and utter indulgence is referred to as Treat Yo Self. Last year on Halloween, I thought I was awfully clever when I combined T-Mobile and Donna-tella's motto with the Hallows Eve expression. Needless to say, I've waited 365 days to use the phrase again. It's the little things, right? I like to think it's a One Fine Day tradition. In honor of this glorious occasion, I've assembled 18 fabulous finds. Now go on and Treat Yo Self!

Feet First

It's no secret that I love a feisty and festive set of flats. When I throw on a colorful or patterned pair, I feel as though I can take on the world. They're precisely the sort of accessory that's enough to add an extra pep in my step. Because Mondays can be a bit of a drag, why don't you throw on your snazziest shoes and jump into the day with both feet. Cheers to tackling this work week with panache. Hop to it!

Why don't you...

via
Lately, I can't seem to get enough inspiration from Diana Vreeland. Perhaps it's because I'm DYING to see THIS documentary. Now, I realize it came out a few months ago, but it's finally making its way to the island. To say I'm excited would be an understatement. I have every intention of seeing the film this weekend, and I couldn't be more ecstatic. I'm literally clicking my heels as I type this.

Over the past few months, I've surrounded myself with books about the iconic and eccentric tastemaker and magazine editor. I've found that I could stare at photos of her for hours. When I read about her, it's nearly impossible to wipe the grin from my face. Her story is intriguingshe reinvented the role of the fashion editor. She inspires others to dream a little bigger and to stand out. Vreeland's the kind of dazzling and tenacious role model that leaves you feeling a bit more daring with an appetite to be extraordinary. I think this vibrant piece of advice from the "Empress of Fashion" says it best: "There's only one very good life—and that's the life you know you want and you make it yourself."

Best known for her 26-year tenure at Harper's Bazaar, Vreeland introduced readers to her colorful and clever "Why don't you?" column. Each month readers got a taste of Vreeland's signature style and personal philosophy. Her suggestions were wildly imaginative and chic. "Don't just be your ordinary dull self. Why don't you be ingenious and make yourself into something else? Here are some of my favorites from her column...

Why don't you...
… cover a big cork bulletin board in bright pink felt, banded with bamboo, and pin with colored thumb-tacks all your various enthusiasms as your life varies from week to week?

… tie an enormous bunch of silver balloons on the foot of your child’s bed on Christmas Eve?

… tie black tulle bows on your wrists?

… wear violet velvet mittens with everything?

…have a room done up in every color green? This will take months, years, to collect, but it will be delightful—a melange of plants, green glass, green porcelains, and furniture covered in sad greens, gay greens, clear, faded, and poison greens?

I hope your day is as vibrant as Mrs. V!

Need Read Greed

Every now and then I get introduced to a fellow blogger and within seconds of visiting her blog, I know we're kindred spirits. That's pretty much the case with Ali Bronska from A Dash of Details. She recently redesigned her blog, and I'm obsessed with its simplicity and clean lines. Hop on over and take a gander. I know you'll adore it! Ali's got an eye for style and her blog is a constant source of inspiration to me and countless others. I guess that sounds like the perfect reason to have her over at One Fine Day for a little Need Read Greed action. Take a peek at her picks. They're delightful!

  • Need: This delicious pumpkin-spice scented candle from Anthropologie. Not only does it fill the house with a perfect fall scent, it also looks darling in any room.
  • Read: Since we just signed on our first house, I am totally engrossed in interior design books. Nate Berkus is the king of building a home, not just a house. This book is a must-have for any new home owners.
  • Greed: To go along with the interior theme, I am lusting over these fabulous Louis Ghost Chairs from Design Within Reach. They are the perfect seating option to give a modern touch to a traditional room.

Thanks for the serene escape, Ali
I can already picture myself nose-deep in Nate's book, seated in a Louis Ghost Chair, with an Illume candle lit. Ahh!

The Crew & Color

by Franz Kline
I stumbled upon this colorful and abstract gem by Franz Kline yesterday and my heart started racing. What was it about this expressionistic piece that got me so twitterpated? Moments later I found myself on J.Crew's website -- that's typically how my mind wanders while I'm killing time online. I guess I was plotting the execution of my next purchase and the use of my birthday dough. It occurred to me that many of the same colors used by Kline in this painting appeared in J.Crew's latest collection. I promise to curb my Crew discussion for awhile, but I plan on seeing these new arrivals firsthand today and I couldn't be more excited! Do you have any favorites?

A few of my favorite pieces...

Wish me luck! I'm off to spend my wad.

Life's Little Details

"The details are not the details. They make the design." -- Charles Eames
Happy Monday, friends! I woke up this morning, and I felt more blessed than ever. I've been gifted with 27 years of love, experiences, and memories. While a pair of snazzy polka dot flats are quite lovely, this charmed life is the greatest gift of all. I'm not exactly sure what I did to deserve such blessings, but I grow more grateful with each day. Mondays are typically my day to GSD or "Get Stuff Done", but instead of running errands and tackling the ol' to-do list, I'll take some time to reflect and thank God for all of the goodness that I've been given. Life is swell, isn't it?

As I type this very post, Tripp sits at my feet; he slobbers and sighs. I guess this is his subtle reminder that I'm being an egomaniac. Oops, I forgot to mention that someone else is celebrating a birthday today at Lil' Puna. Happy Birthday, Tripp! He turns nine today, and he's as lively as ever! I wish you could see the way he sprightly climbs our hill. Gosh, I love this dog! When we considered adopting him almost four years ago, it was the moment I saw his birth date listed on the AKC paperwork that I knew it was meant to be. We loaded him in the truck, and I promised him a lifetime of milk bones, tennis balls, and a celebratory scoop of ice cream on his birthday. I'm proud to say that I've upheld my end of the bargain. Please pardon the following corny statement: Tripp, you're Golden!

While Tripp and I bask in all the birthday pomp and circumstance, take a gander at some of my favorite moments from the past few weeks -- the details that make this life a whole lot sweeter.

Final Thoughts...
Flyboy was supposed to return last Friday, right? Well, his homecoming was postponed by a few days. If you follow me on Instagram, you probably witnessed all the ways in which I documented my boredom last weekend. On the bright side, he's home now and we both have today off! Isn't that the perfect reason to keep today's post on the light side? But before we call it a week, there are a few things I'd love to discuss... Did you see J.Crew's new arrivals? Swoon. I honestly can't decide between the Frenchie and La Parisienne sweaters. Thoughts? Be sure to read Color Confidential. It will make you wish you were a color librarian. Oh, and that gold spotted clutch at Poketo?! That's definitely a must! Anyone watch Flipping Out lately? What about Jeff's Grandma Patty. Why is this the first time we're meeting her? Anyone else excited about the return of Million Dollar Decorators? Let's discuss.
Have a swell weekend.
