IOWA RECAP

"THE DETAILS ARE NOT THE DETAILS. THEY MAKE THE DESIGN." — CHARLES EAMES

Last week, while scrolling through my camera roll, I was reminiscing about our trip to Iowa and I felt especially grateful to have documented so many sweet moments of Max interacting with my family (grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and their kids). Is there anything better than watching your tribe smother the heck outta your child with such unconditional love?! Didn't think so. Everyone went out of their way to feed us and entertain us (currently attempting to work off that pan of Gooey Bars I devoured). In fact, Max is STILL talking about all of the insane equipment he got to see and take rides in (a semi, multiple tractors, combines, riding lawn mowers, a Ranger he will only refer to as a "dump truck", and my aunt's FJ Cruiser that he insists on calling a "monster truck"). I unabashedly hoped we could do all the fun things I correlate with Summers in Iowa like catch frogs, caterpillars, and fireflies. We managed to check these items from the bucket list, but I should also note that the whole frog thing ended up with me getting peed on (no warts, I promise!) and the chartreuse caterpillar I insisted on holding was later identified as poisonous (sani wipes, anyone?!). Ha Ha! There were evening scooter rides and trips down the slide; assistance from Alexa and the occasional "aw hell"; unruly sprinkler shenanigans (this helicopter is nuts!) and a jaunt to the local splash pad; 'Bacca masks and BBQ; a fruitful cucumber haul from my grandpa's garden and dirty jokes/silly anecdotes over slices of taco pizza. Yep, it was pretty wonderful to sit back—when I wasn't putting Max in timeout, of course—and soak up all of the little things that make trips in IA so memorable.

MISSOURI RECAP

"THE DETAILS ARE NOT THE DETAILS. THEY MAKE THE DESIGN." — CHARLES EAMES

Happy Wednesday, sweet readers! How are you?? We got back from our tour of the Midwest last week and after 18 days away from home, getting back into a Swell Rio groove took a little work. Yikes! But now that Max is back to napping again (Thank God!), the fridge is stocked, and the plants are rebounding, it seems like the right time to check in and share a few snippets from our trip. I'll spare you from any long-winded summary today and let the snapshots do the talking, but our week in Missouri was filled mostly with wedding festivities (Flyboy's dad got remarried), watching Max play excitedly with heirloom toys (FB's ol' tractor), lawnmower rides, skipping through sprinklers with grandparents, along with several memorable dinners in the company of family and friends.

The older Max gets, the more grateful we are that he gets to make memories in the same places we did when we were kids and with the same people that have loved us so well over the years. As an Air Force brat, I know Max will cherish experiences like these more than anything. If he's like his mom, he'll look back on trips like this fondly and he'll be reminded that he doesn't need a literal hometown when he carries special moments with people he loves dearly so close to his heart.

Now, as I prep tomorrow's Iowa Recap (Don't get too excited!), PLEEEEASE tell me what you've been up to!! I'm dying to know.

WHAT I'M WEARING WEDNESDAY

Sometimes I forget I'm not auditioning for Bravo's Summer House and I get all gussied up to go poolside only to realize this isn't The Hamptons, there's no Rosé in sight, and my end destination is actually the kiddie pool. Oops! But just because we don't frequent white sandy beaches in Hawaii like we used to and Andy Cohen hasn't asked me to be part of some fabulous new series like he does in my dreams, that doesn't mean I can't make the most of the current scenery with another colorful and classic ensemble. Right?!

DC RECAP: PART ONE

"THE DETAILS ARE NOT THE DETAILS. THEY MAKE THE DESIGN." — CHARLES EAMES

Happy HAPPY Wednesday, m' dears! Today's post is like ripping off a Band-Aid. I'm still too emotional to go in-depth about our recent trip to DC because I miss my parents like crazy cakes and I go to the ugly cry whenever I even attempt to share a funny anecdote or sweet memory. Trust me on this one, Flyboy knows firsthand! That being said, I DID promise to return this week and I do thrive best in my routine, so I figured a two-part recap ought to get us back into the Swell Rio swing of things. And because a picture is worth a thousand words, I'll let the images do most of the talking today. All bias aside, I think they're pretty great!

Oh, and in the event things seem "off" this week, they probably are. As Max and I adjust to our norm, we're also expecting a boat load of construction over the next few days. Do you remember February's hail storm? Well, our base housing unit is finally getting a new roof, siding, gutters, fencing, etc. I'm not entirely sure how this will affect our neurotic dogs and my wily tot's nap time (a blogging essential!), but I'm striving to remain reasonably optimistic. While I can't promise anything, I'm sure we'll hit a groove really soon. In the meantime, thanks for your patience. I've missed you and this colorful little corner of the web!

Enough from me. How are YOU?! Tell me something goooooooooood...
