THURSDAY'S THOUGHTS

THINKING ABOUT: Have you heard of Aaptiv? Has anyone tried the on-demand audio fitness app? My interest is piqued and I think I might experiment with the free trial next week. I typically stick with the same spinning workout (because fish sticks on Friday...), but something about this setup seems like it could be fun and convenient. I know I could especially benefit from the "guidance" of a trainer to help walk me through new workout routines. The fact that it's synced to "the perfect playlist" can't hurt either.

THANKFUL FOR: Max and I are headed to visit my parents next month. Squee! The trip honestly couldn't come at a better time. I'm SO ready to get outta Dodge and spend some quality time with my mom and dad. It's been far too long since we saw them in November.

WATCHING: I was texting my mom and sister this week about Vanderpump Rules. Because, priorities. We decided the moment Tom Sandoval (dressed in drag, face full of makeup) dramatically kicks in the door only to find Tom Schwartz, who he likened to a battered wife, on the toilet happily texting and waving at his pals as one of our top five favorite Bravo moments (see gif here). Ever. Please tell me you watched that episode and had to rewind the scene a few times to get the giggles out like I did. HYSTERICAL!

EATING: If I prepare a new recipe for dinner and it's really good, Flyboy inevitably asks the following question: "Is this from that cookbook you mentioned?" Ha Ha! Yep, I'm still REALLY into the recipes featured in SkinnyTaste Fast and Slow. Slowly but surely, we're making our way through the book repeating favorites and dabbling with new recipes. This week we tried the Hamburger Stroganoff (can't find a link; may be exclusive to the book) and Buffalo Chicken Lettuce Wraps upon my friend Jen's recommendation. As expected, both meals were predictably tasty and totally worth recreating again. Who would be opposed to a tasty trend like this?

LISTENING TO: After gallivanting around Swell Rio sans Maxwell—my goal was to complete three days at daycare in an effort to switch it up for both of us—I sat down to write today's post and my phone rang. It was the CDC. Apparently Max refused to eat any food at lunch and it was a courtesy call to inform me of his refusal. Insert deep sigh here. Over the course of 19 hours, the caregivers were on to my son and his stubborn ways. Grrrrrrrreat! I explained he's very strong-willed and ignoring the behavior (as long as he's not causing a disturbance or any harm) is best. Sigh. Undecided as to what I should do in this scenario, I spent the better part of the lunch hour hemming and hawing over whether I needed to pick up my child or leave him there to complete that day as planned. As most of you are aware, very little is easy with this kid. The constant power struggle has been an issue since he was a newborn. In that moment, I didn't want to cry because I felt bad for my disgruntled child. No, I wanted to cringe instead because I felt so terrible and embarrassed that other people were having to deal with him and his wily ways. Ugh! In the end, I knew if I went and got him that he'd gain the control he so desperately seeks, so I waited it out and picked him up later as planned. Upon my arrival, I tried to make as little eye contact as possible with the employees, grab my son, and exit quickly. We peeled out of the parking lot and I heard nothing but Jay-Z's On To The Next One playing in my head—because that's what a typical day feels like with a child like Max.

READING: On Tuesday afternoon I checked the mail and found a copy of Where The Wild Moms Are. I had NO clue this book even existed, but my parents saw it at The Paper Source recently and they felt like I needed a copy of my own. You guys, it's a hoot!

LOVING: I tried Glossier's Cloud Paint this weekend and I'm totally obsessed with Dusk. I was hesitant to try the shade because the swatch looks kind of muddy, but after reading reviews and trying it myself, I'm a believer. If you're interested in the cream blush, check out Cindy's blog for an in-depth review and a few application tips. I found her latest post to be super helpful!

Enough about me. How are you feeling today? What are you up to? Thanks for stopping by!!

SHOP SPOTLIGHT

ERIN FLETT LINEN PILLOWS AND DECORATIVE HOME GOODS MADE IN MAINE

A few months after Max was born, I purchased a hand-printed pillow (this one) from Erin Flett and let's just say it didn't disappoint. Obsessed with the charm and quality of her designs, I went on to send a few totes and dish towels to friends as gifts. In my opinion, they're a slam dunk when you're not entirely sure what to get someone you adore. From time to time, I like to check in on Erin's shop and snoop at her Instagram often to see if she's added any new treasures to the mix. Never one to let me down, I noticed Erin's selection of goodies has only expanded, which makes me giddy just thinking about all the gifting (and treat yo self—Ha!) possibilities. As if the canvas lunch boxes, patterned clutches, and whimsical drinking glasses aren't enough, the throw pillow hoarder in me can't stop gushing over the recent mix of velvet WITH a special silk-screened trim (think spots and stripes forever).

HERE ARE MY FAVORITES...

LIFE'S LITTLE DETAILS

"THE DETAILS ARE NOT THE DETAILS. THEY MAKE THE DESIGN." — CHARLES EAMES
Happy Tuesday, m' dears! Being strong for your child while trying to keep yourself together isn't easy. Flyboy's friend/co-worker generously offered us his toddler's slot at the base daycare center this week while their family is out of town on vacation. I was initially elated at the idea of carving out some time for myself this week to do a little Spring cleaning, get ahead of the blog schedule, and run a few solo errands—all while Max has the opportunity to play with kids his age and adapt to a new environment, schedule, caregivers, etc. When the idea of him going was presented to me, I wasn't entirely sure how many days I planned to take Max, but I'm starting to think we could benefit from an entire week even if it pains me to admit that. Now trust me when I say any sane person reading the last few sentences (and a smattering of blog posts that have been published over the past months/years) would agree a little change could benefit the two of us. This should be a mother's dream!! Riiiiiight?! Sigh. While Max has frequented the daycare center a dozen different times over the past year, the drop off never seems to get any easier and that's the hardest part. In fact, the last time we took him, we were told he stood by the door and cried about 75 percent of the time he was there. Ugh! We're even starting to get the impression from some of the staff that he's the problem child—the one they don't look forward to visiting. Oh, grrrrrrrrreat. You guys, the look on their faces when we arrive is slightly embarrassing. Seriously, it doesn't make this anxious mother and son feel at ease, and the last thing I want to do is leave them with MY screaming mess of a two year old. He's my problem, not theirs. Oy! The older Max gets, the stronger he's become, and he also has the ability to express himself. We try our best to talk about all of the fun stuff that he gets to do when he's there, but our little guy continues to hearken back on his last visit and tell us about how he cried and waited for his daddy to come back. Gah! You can only imagine how peeling him out of his car seat yesterday morning when we arrived while trying to maintain a calm and positive composure as he screamed "NO CDC!! WE GO H-E-B, MA! PLEEEEEEEASE! PLEEEEEEEASE!" is not as simple as I hoped. Avoiding situations like this isn't going to make things any easier (Hello, kindergarten!) and I realize that all of the time we've spent together since he was born has made me more of a problem than a solution. Sometimes that is a tough pill to swallow when you know it was never your intention. I'm clearly just in the beginning stages of searching for the right balance—encouraging new experiences while trying to hold on for dear life and cling to what's comfortable or feels easy. With all that lies ahead and the lessons to be learned, one thing's for sure—motherhood isn't for wimps.

Now excuse me while I go clean ALL the closets and rid myself of any guilt I experienced earlier.
We all know it will only be hours before I'm Maxed out again and again.

LURVE LOAVE LUFF

Let's get right to it, shall we?
Here's what made me feel all twitterpated, smile contagiously, giggle uncontrollably, etc.

  • Linen Napkin Set // I have a set of these with hot pink edges and they're so handy for entertaining. Must collect them all.
  • No-Bake Salted Caramel Cups // Oh wow! I kind of want a reason, any reason, to whip these up this weekend.
  • Notch Bracelet // The handmade bracelet is simple, but in so many ways it makes a big statement. I can't get enough!
  • Bobbi Brown Art Stick Liquid // I'm a HUUUUUUGE fan of Bobbi's Art Stick, so I have great expectations for this newbie.
  • Heeled Mules With Bow // There's just something about navy paired with lavender that reminds me of Spring. Also, $40.
  • Dear Sundays // Non-toxic, vegan, and cruelty free. And the kicker? They come in 44 delicious hues. How lovely!?!
  • Perpetual Monthly Calendar // I don't use my calendar like I used to and it's a waste. This no-frills option is what I need.
  • Turquoise Fireworks Earrings // They're like spectacular sea urchins that you get to wear on your ears and I'm smitten.
  • Healy Lane Candi // I'll be honest, it's been far too long since a bag at KSNY really did it for me. This is a game changer.
  • Miss You Candle // I need to keep The Little Market it mind when I'm searching for the perfect gift. How sweet is this?
  • Cloud Paint // If it's good enough for m' celeb bestie Reese Witherspoon AT the Oscars, then it must be flipping fab.
  • OTS Striped Top // I'm obsessed with the current over-the-shoulder trend, but can someone be honest and tell me if they stay in place? I'd LOVE to try one, specifically this gem, but I don't want to have to adjust the top nonstop.
  • Cymbal Necklace // Madewell's pendant necklaces are some of my very favorites. I love the simple beaded detail.
  • Lulu Flat Clutch // The color. The whimsy! The gingham. The jewels! Did we just become best friends? Yup.

Happy Friday, m' dears! Make this weekend count.

P.S. Sorry I missed you yesterday for this week's edition of Thursday's Thoughts. I was in bed with a pesky migraine. Ewwww!

WHAT I'M WEARING WEDNESDAY

One thing I miss most about my pre-mom and pre-Swell Rio life is having more options to get gussied up. Anyone out there feel me on this one?! I knew it would be something I would miss when we moved here and I had Max, so I figured I might as well be proactive and get dressed anyway—even if that means a morning jaunt to the park or a trip into town to run errands. Sometimes if I'm wearing m' jewels at Wally World, I'll get a few stares or comments, but I refuse to give up something that brings me real joy just because I might be in the minority on this one. Over the past two years, I've learned that being a mom means you need to be comfortable, but I also want to feel kind of cute. So much of our day-to-day is routine based, so the last thing I want is to wear the SAME thing every day. For this reason, I'm always hunting for new options to mix up the ol' momsemble. And now that it's beginning to warm up in West Texas (too soon!), I was instantly intrigued by this ruffled number from J.Crew. Now, I know I said I don't want to wear the SAME thing every day, but when I tried it on, I loved it so much I had to buy all three colors (they were on promo a few weeks ago for 30% off). The top is easy, different, and I just had to tell you about it. When I find a winner, I've got to pay it forward.

MOMSEMBLE ESSENTIALS:

*My mom and sister both purchased the black-and-white striped activity tracker here for $49.
**I know these are kind of spendy, but I can promise you they're worth EVERY penny. No saggy butts.
